Food

OK, so the word problems listed in the last posting were not that popular. Just so you know, the answers are:
Meniscus - the small concave area at the neck of a container. This can be loosened with small repeated taps.
Surface Tension - the attraction of a liquid for its container
Pressure versus Volume - think of a closed piston. As you push down on a piston, it becomes requires more and more force. As volume decreases, pressure increases.
Percent - if 25 people out of 100 have red hair, then 75 have non-red hair. So 75 out of 100 have non-red hair or 75%
The Mom - The Mom is a Lyric Soprano, like Julie Andrews. Anyone in our house on a Sunday morning should remember this.

Now, a few fact LIST items on food.
If you ever have children, you should discover that the nightly dinner is important. Everyone at the table with lively and family discussions. Even with comments like "Eww, what's that", or "Peas, NOT PEAS", or "How much of that do I have to eat...", The Mom was strong and steady and had nutritious and delicious food on the table.

We may have covered some of these but the food fact LIST items include:
One piece of vegetable for every year of age
Only take one piece of bread at a time
No throwing food at your sister
No "showing" food
You had to clean (most) of your plate before you were excused (or before dessert, if we had any that day). This excludes the "bite for the food god" from Alison.
When setting the table, the knife and spoon are on the right of the plate (knife edge always toward the spoon) and the fork on the left.
Everyone has their traditional place to sit (even today)

(I heard a good definition on the TV yesterday, "Activities repeated regularly become traditions")

Any other food fact LIST items...

Word Problems...YEA...

OK, everyone remembers certain conversations and discussions around the dinner table when they were kids. Specific subject matter can vary but they usually revolve around topics of interest or common information.

Our home was no different than others. Besides the discussions of skate boards, movies, curfews and phone usage, the subjects of music, common sense thinking, math and the basic laws of nature were also common. It would be great to get a question about one of these matters. When kids were younger, you could give any answer (see post on the difference between "the answer and an answer"). As they got older, you had to start to actually give the right answers. These, from time to time, would involve terms or ideas that, if used enough, would become part of the vocabulary.

Let's see if you can give definitions or the answers for some of the terms we used alot.
Like:
Meniscus

Surface tension

Pressure versus volume relationships (when a volume gets smaller, what happens to pressure)

If 25 out of 100 people have red hair, what % of the people have non-red hair

The Mom is what type of soprano
